How to Track the CARE Assessment for California Carpet Sales

California carpet retailers can track the CARE assessment in Floorzap as an expense line item, either added manually or built into a carpet service template.

If you sell carpet in California, you collect the CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort) assessment on carpet sales and remit it to CARE. Floorzap does not have a dedicated CARE field, so you track the assessment as an expense line item on your quotes and invoices. Start by creating a CARE expense type, then either add it to quotes and invoices as needed or build it into a carpet service template so it applies automatically.

Floorzap does not calculate the CARE assessment for you. Check CARE for the current rate and confirm your reporting requirements with your accountant.

Setting Up CARE as an Expense Type

Creating CARE as an expense type in Floorzap makes it available to add to any quote or invoice. Do this first, whether you plan to add the fee manually or build it into a service template.

  1. From the dashboard, click Settings in the left-hand menu.

  2. Select System Lists.

  3. Click Payment/Expense Lists.

  4. Choose Expense Types.

  5. Click Add New and name the expense type (for example, CARE Assessment).

  6. Save. The expense type is now available to add to quotes and invoices.

Adding CARE to a Carpet Service Template

This is the recommended approach for tracking the CARE assessment. Building the CARE line item into a carpet service template means it is applied by default on every carpet job, so no one has to remember to add it manually.

  1. Go to Settings and select Service Templates.

  2. Click Add New to create a carpet template, or open your existing carpet template.

  3. Add the CARE line item alongside your other carpet materials and services.

  4. Save the template.

  5. When you build a carpet quote, import this template. The CARE line item comes in with it automatically.
