How to Create a Service Template and Add It to a Quote

Build a service template with labor, materials, and services, then import it into a quote and replace placeholder products. Template prices are static and don't update when vendor pricing changes.

Create a Service Template

A service template saves a set of labor, materials, and services for a service type so you can add them to a quote in one step instead of building each line item by hand.

Service templates are static. Product prices are saved when you add products to the template and don't update automatically, even for B2B (vendor-connected) products whose vendor price changes. When vendor pricing changes, update the products on your template, and check product prices after importing a template into a quote.

  1. Make sure the service you want a template for is in your system list. Go to Settings > System Lists > Service Types. If the service isn't listed, click Add New to add it.

  2. In your labor cost list, make sure your labor items are assigned to this service type, or to a general service type that applies across services. This makes the template quicker to set up. For details, see How to Setup Labor Cost List.

  3. Go to Settings > Service Templates and click Add New.

  4. Click Add Service, then scroll through the list or type the name of the service type you want the template for.

  5. Give your template a name and click the blue check mark to confirm.

  6. Add material line items to your template. You can add specific products, or add a material line item as a placeholder that you'll replace with the actual product on each quote.

  7. Add your service line items, such as labor.

  8. Once you've added all your line items, save the template. You can preview the template to check how it will look on a quote.

Add a Service Template to a Quote

After you create a service template, you can import it into a quote to add all of its labor, materials, and services at once, then replace any placeholder products with the actual products for the job.

  1. Create a quote, select a customer, and click Begin Quote. If you're new to quotes, see How to Create a Quote.

  2. Click Import Template, then search for and select your service template. The template's line items are added to the quote. Because service template prices don't update automatically, check product prices after importing.

  3. To swap a placeholder for the actual product, click the Replace Product button on that line item.

  4. Search for the product you want, select it, and click Change Material. To narrow your search, you can filter by stock type, vendor, and private category. The new material replaces the placeholder on the quote. Repeat for each product you need to replace.

  5. Save your quote.

Do Discounts Import With a Service Template?

When you import a service template into a quote, line-item discounts and deduction line items on the template are imported, because they're part of the service. An overall quote discount is not imported, because service templates are saved per service, not per quote, project, or job.
