How to Change the Unit of Measure (UOM) on an Inventory Item.
Need to fix a UOM on an existing inventory item? Here's what you can change, what's locked, and the workaround when an item is already in use.
Can I Change the UOM on an Inventory Item?
It depends on whether the item has been used on any jobs.
-
Not yet used on any jobs: You can edit the UOM directly in inventory settings.
-
Already on existing jobs (locked): The UOM cannot be edited directly. Use the workaround below.
How to Edit UOM on an Unlocked Item
-
Go to Inventory.
-
Find your product and open it.
-
Update the Unit of Measure field.
-
Click Save.
Workaround for Locked Items
If the item is locked because it's already been used on jobs:
-
Duplicate the product — find the item, click Duplicate, and give it a new name (e.g., append "v2" or update the name to reflect the correct UOM).
-
Set the correct UOM on the duplicate.
-
Mark the original as invisible so it no longer appears in product searches. It will remain on existing jobs for historical accuracy.
-
Use the new item going forward.
