QUICK STEPS
Paying a sales rep:
Verify the commission amount first — don't assume it's correct, especially if the job had changes or adjustments.
In the work order, go to Work Order Actions → Mark Salesman Ready for Payment to add them to the payment queue.
Go to the Payments tab on the work order to see the amount due, or go to Payments → Accounts Payable → Sales Rep → Add Payment.
Locate the salesperson and click Add Payment.
Select payment type: QuickBooks Payable if they're 1099, or your bank account if they're on payroll.
Attach any files if needed, then save.
Refresh the work order to confirm the sales rep shows as paid.
Paying referral bonuses (two options):
One-off referral: Add an additional labor service → add a line item for the referral → select the contractor or referrer → this generates a payable.
Recurring referral tracking: On the customer's Customer Details tab, set the lead source to Referral and select (or add) the referrer — this tracks commission automatically over time.
TIPS:
💡 Use the labor line-item method for one-off referral payments; use the customer-tab referral field if the person regularly refers business and you want commission tracked automatically.
⚠️ Always double-check the commission amount before paying — changes or adjustments on the job can affect it.
Remember: Payment type depends on the rep's status — QuickBooks Payable for 1099, bank account for payroll — and referral payments should be set up differently depending on whether it's a one-time or recurring source.
